Guilt-Free Change

Cliché as it may sound, a woman's hair is considered to be her crowning glory. I used to wonder why women who are in despair head to the salon and ask for a make over - dye hair, perm, rebond. style or cut. I'd personally interpret it as a means to regain the glory - be confident again, feel better/sexy/beautiful and so on and so forth.

I truly believe that our hair is an extension of our identity. The way we style it. How we want it to be cut. The way we groom it, fix it, accessorize it. It's a part of who we are and caring for it is essential(Yes, even though my Biology professor told me that there can never be a healthy hair because our hair are DEAD CELLS). It reflects our personality, or so do I believe?

Talking about my personal transformation, HAIR DYE. In high school, it's obviously a no-no. In fact, I never wanted to dye my hair because I thought only punks appreciate that. Moreover, I just wanted to rebond my hair because mine was annoyingly waaaaaaaaavy. Back in college, I had the freedom and I started to grew fond of it because I have a lot of red-headed colleagues. They looked great, fashionable and in style.  I'm sorry but I sort of found the 'girlishness' in me.

Two things stopped me far too long for me to dye my hair. First, my supposed PAL employment. It's now over so I'm so free to do it (hair color). The second reason, however,  is about how would it look on me. I carried my natural black hair for twenty years. Though I've seen how it looked good on other women, I was hesitant because it might not suit me. I fear that it can make me look cheap or slutty.

Took the bold step several weeks ago not because I got depressed with my PAL application but because it's something I've been meaning to try for such a long time. Since it would not interfere with anything anymore, I finally had my hair dyed for the first time.  It felt great. I had it done at Ronel Egang's Salon and I obviously didn't took a wrong move this time. Red, Green, Purple. . . There are lots of colors I wanted to try but dared not.

They said that with the absence of fear, change becomes successful. That made me go for it. Mama also agreed. I think my mom thought it would make me feel better after what happened with my PAL application. Honestly, it's not about that. This is just something I wanted to try.

THE END RESULT. Tah-dah! Been enjoying my blonde hair for quite some time now. Also,  my point of view regarding hair coloring changed. I must embrace who I am but it doesn't mean that I can do away without any change. Sometimes, changing is also about growing. Yes, the hair adds up to ones image but it can never be a basis to define us. I don't feel cheap nor slutty.  It's our actions and our character that would make us who we are.

Embrace yourselves and be fab lovies! :)

PAL Flight Cancelled

After expressing my thoughts on my first job, let me now express my disappointment with PAL. I may not do this, but I want to. Almost everybody knows that being a part of this airline is a big career advancement and prestige especially for their pilots and FAs. With that being said, it is just appropriate that PAL strictly and thoroughly screen their applicants. I have nothing against that but I just hope that their application process and schedule of activities is systematic so as not to waste the time and efforts of the applicants.

Initial Screening

When it comes to applying for a job, "we'll call you" most of the time, means that you're not hired, you better not hope anymore and start looking for another job. I sort of did this except for the hoping part since they stated that they'd call you if you pass the initial screening or you'd get an email if you don't. I got neither of the two.

Last March 1 and 2, Philippine Airlines opened an FA screening at Royal Mandaya Hotel (Davao City). I attended the second day and went through an interview, height measurement, filling up information forms, recording a video and having my picture taken. It sounds fast and easy but it's not. You have to wait for several hours because of the number of hopefuls.

Fortunately, we got in and we were briefed right after initial screening. The one who did the talking told us about the next step and that we'll be contacted after 2 weeks. Later on, I found out that some of my classmates passed the initial screening in the first day, too. However, in their briefing the staff of PAL told them that they'll call after a month. So what is it really? 2 weeks passed, 1 month passed and even our graduation day passed. I already went back to Manila, got a job and so are my classmates in Davao who waited for PAL to call.

2 months passed. I'm also on the verge of my two weeks employment at an advertising firm when they called. May 7, 2013. I can clearly  remember  that it was after a meeting with one of our clients and my smile almost reached my ears as the person told me that she's from PAL and that she'd schedule me an interview with PAL president, Mr. Ramon S. Ang, himself. Thinking that I'm still in Davao, she offered a plane ticket but then I told her that I'm already in Manila. Staying for good.

FA Interview for RSA

May 16, 2013. We were asked to be at the PAL office at Mandaluyong by 8:00 am. I got there a minute or two before 8 am. There were already a lot of applicants that were screened from different parts of the country. I was also happy to see two of my schoolmates from Davao who got there. While waiting, a staff told me that we were not going to be interviewed. And yes we weren't. We were only viewed by PAL president for visual impact. Parang pageant lang noh? Mr. Ang was that busy because after an hour or two pa kami na-entertain. It lasted for a few minutes only. Some were not fortunate but a lot passed his standards.

After those bloody but fruitful hours of waiting, we were asked to take lunch and were given  the address where we are going to take our exam by 1:00 pm. Same day.

Examination

We took the examination at PNB, Macapagal. It lasted for almost three hours. They gave us a number to call and inquire if we passed the exam. Aside from that, we're individually checked up as well, physically. They looked at our hands, fingers, elbows, shoulders, face and even our teeth. I like their staff there because they're approachable and very organized.

Interlude: It just so happens that I also got something to do at TRINOMA by 10:00 pm. We had to ingress some stuff for our booth because we will be having a mall activation the next day. We finished the booth the next day and I got home from Quezon to Cavite by 3:00 am. It literally cost me my job.

I'm in such a good place, work wise. If it weren't for my dream job, I wouldn't quit my former job. But I did and I have to because PAL kept on scheduling appointments without considering the availability of the applicants. It was them who failed to call within their schedule, not all people can wait for them. Some people tried hard to be a part of them. And I'm one of those who have a pinch of regret.

Medical Check Up

May 20, 2013. The step I disliked the most because of their inefficient, unapproachable, inconsiderate and inconsistent staff. I no longer want to dwell on the details of how hard it is to talk to them and how they give instructions inconsistently. The bottom line is I get to be regularized if I signed  the undertaking stating that I'll carry all the expenses for the removal of my 3 impacted teeth. I signed last June 7 because they said I can still join the training on June 24. May 21-June 7, it took them that long to tell me that there is something that might disqualify my application when in fact I regularly call them for an update because that was their instruction. I'd usually get a "call again tomorrow" statement.

Last June 14, the others who passed already attended the orientation. My classmates in Davao who got in the initial screening never got an email. Thank you PAL for not having a word of honor. It would  be easily acceptable if you just said to my face that I can no longer proceed because of my impacted teeth when, in fact, you already asked me to personally go to your medical clinic just to sign a paper.

May you continue to shine through being the country's flag carrier, first in Asia.

Thoughts on My First Job

After the Summer Solstice, here's a more serious post. 37 days after graduation, I'm finally EMPLOYED.What I thought that I liked about the job:  The Setup. I reside in Cavite and I got a job from the North. It's almost a 2-hour travel depending on traffic however I don't feel exhausted because work from the office is only thrice a week. We get to work from home every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Moreover, I don't need to get up that early because the office opens at 10 am. Lucky us! :)

I lasted for 2 weeks. It's not that I don't want my job, it's just that I have to quit. We decided to quit. As a matter of fact, I loved my job and I'd often tell my friends how much I enjoy it. Besides, it really suits my degree and I'm comfortable and at ease with my employer even when I was still being interviewed for the position.

For those who are clueless,  I was hired as an Assistant Project Manager at an advertising firm somewhere in Ortigas. I looked up to the heavy projects done by such a small and amateur ad firm. I once dreamed to grow with it and be with them as I advance my career.

First Day

I wore a very simple aztec blouse and jeggings. I love how free we are to dress up in the office. No uniforms but decent clothes would do. It's hard move around and catch a bus on the way to work with a skirt or with high heels on. I've witnessed how it can be a disadvantage to other women.

We have this small but spacious office at Burgundy Tower fronting Robinson's Galleria. It's just enough for us since there's only a few employees and we only use it thrice a week. On my very first day, I was asked to co-brainstorm in a meeting for a certain project for a soda company. I was asked to make a PPT presentation and I remember being mentored by my boss on how to write a brief business letter. He said that my writing style fits blogging and that it should be adjusted. Well, that's acceptable.

So back to my first day at work, what I  also liked about it is that we don't get to be stucked in the office. We get to go out and travel a lot especially during meeting with the clients. Got this picture from my very first client meeting; with the big boss of a huge juice company. Well aside from getting connection, I'd love that I also get the chance to build relationships. As I met my immediate supervisor, Ma'am Nikki, who will train me  to be better in the this job, I find her really helpful. . .  and concerned.

At Work

Upper left: That was a part of our small office I was  talking about. In their, we usually work in front of our work units. Emails, presentations, research, etc. . . Lower left: Since everybody got a laptop to work on, my boss bought additional units and I got this one to work with. Upper left: We must be reachable at all times both online and thru mobile phones. I used to get a lot of calling errands because I need to update on a lot of steps in bringing up an event from the teenie tiny details to the major ones. I contact suppliers, ask for quotations, set an order and etc. Lower right: Checking event locations and ocular visits are fun too. I get to familiarize different areas in the North. Yay! :)

A fair share of my time. When I'm sent to do an errand alone, here's what usually happens. I do this at the cab, at the mall or wherever I caught myself bored or waiting for another errand. Best job eveeeeer. It really is an advantage if you love what you're doing. You should be happy so that you'll only encounter physical stress and not mental or emotional exhaustion.

Let's wrap up this post: what I do really like about the work is that I'm able to learn a lot of stuff, meet different kinds of people and be my self. Those two weeks were a priceless experience. If only the company gives a much better form of security and assurance to the employers, we could have stayed.

For all who have read this and currently hunts a job, good luck! :*

On Being a Woman

After Graduation

Time flew so fast that it seems like my first day in the university was only yesterday. I loved high school but I loved college even more. Maybe it was the new surroundings. Right after high school graduation I was sent to Davao (against my will)  to take an examination in Ateneo De Davao University. On my birthday, April 25, 2009, I got a Notice of Acceptance which means I got in. I considered that a gift. I adjusted for a few months and adapted for the next three years. I graduated last March 23 2013, decided to work in Davao but now sent back to Cavite where my family resides. I had to be separated with my boyfriend but I considered that a challenge.

Back in Cavite

After almost 17 years in school, I thought of splurging on travel and vacation. However, that was just a thought and there's no money to splurge (wish ko lang). I was a bum but it was very relaxing to stay at home, not think of deadlines or exams, eat, sleep all I want and go out with friends. It was fun but it wasn't satisfying maybe it was the lack of allowance. But it may also be the temporary pause in the process of learning.

I don't get why a lot of people remain unemployed for several months when a lot of opportunities are laid before them. When I surf the internet or watch television, I often see hiring advertisements (hindi pa ako nagbabasa ng dyaryo niyan ah).  To obtain a job is a choice and that is why pamudmud kung pamudmud ng resume. I sent my CV to different companies online and received calls for interview; I attended some of them.

Much to my surprise, I received a call yesterday (April 25, 2013) asking me to start reporting on Monday. What an exquisite surprise. After 1 month and 1 day from the date of my graduation, I earned myself a job. Another wonderful gift for my birthday. This weekend should be party-ful, if such word exists. Haha!

First Job

What to expect? I don't know, really. But I felt the need to make an impression, a good kind of impression. It may not always be true because it's subjective but it lasts. I kept reminding myself that I need to start learning how to wake up early. I need to be punctual and I need to stop acting like a child. Acting like a professional is a big challenge for me but I had to overthrow childishness if I want to be respected by my workmates.

It's important to establish a good image because it'll give you a good reputation. I don't want to be known and treated as the 'bunsoy' just because I'm the youngest. Credits to my Practicum professor, Sir Rikki Enriquez. Now I'm blabbing. I'm excited to work but slightly saddened to leave my stress-free life however I must bid farewell.

Goodbye teenage life, goodbye vacation.
Hello womanhood, hello workmates! :)

Jmenuji se Paulina

Dobrý den! Jmenuji se Paulina :)
(Hello! My name is Paulina)

The gorgeous woman above is Paulina but she's not me. She's Paulina Porizkova and I'm Paulina Briones. I figured that someone pretty might grace my first blog post on this new blog. However, it's not just the pretty face nor the same name that got me into her. I was really named after her because she was looked up to, fantasized and loved by some members of the family way back then. I do, too. Up until now. . .

Anyway, I just turned twenty years old today hence the blog name. I'm also the blog author of http://pauthefreespirit.blogspot.com, a personal turned  lifestyle blog and http://tummytale.blogspot.com, food blog. I lost interest in my previous personal blog because of the backlogs and I promise not to do it here.

The aftermath of graduating in college, being unemployed, bores me. It even bloats me. That eat-sleep-eat routine will literally kill me. Blogging would be one of the best distraction. No more epic unproductive  days. All thanks to my Davao Blogger comrades.

Have a lovely summer everyone! :)

Christmas Break in a Nutshell

Family picture :)

I went home for Christmas and I've finally reconciled with my mother. It was a  year-long war with her in Cavite and I in Davao, there weren't any chances of  saying apologies. Last Christmas brought us back together and we're a better family now.

What I do love most about going home is that I can splurge on food and of course I get to enjoy my meal with my family. Here in Davao I have to  maintain a strict budget with regard to my food expenses but back at home, mama and papa would be very happy to  feed me.
I feel that I am missed :)

More family pictures! Have you noticed how we tried to match our outfit? Everyone must have the shade of gray. Before stepping out of the house, we make sure that we'll have our family picture taken.

We had also spent the Wednesdays hearing the Novena mass at Baclaran. Even before I was born, my mother has been a faithful devotee of Mary the Immaculate Conception (of Baclaran) You can't imagine how many people visit the church to mention their prayers and petitions. My mother is one of them.

I'm glad to have been able to bond with my Senior High School/Alberione family. I've been away for 4 years and I only get to bond with them during vacations but it has never affected our relationship.

Home cooked food (lutong bahay). It's another thing that I badly missed home. I really don't get to cook a lot at the boarding house. It's also different to have a mother who prepares 3 meals in a day for you :)

With my cousin and my brother :)
My New Year were just as happy. I've been online that time but decided to make the most out of my time by spending it with my family and not by updating my blog. HAPPY 2013! It's never too late. Photos! :)

Have you heard about the "goodbye Philippines" firecracker? Well, we did not use it. We had the most child-friendly fireworks because none of us want to welcome another year with a missing finger, arm, or anything. After a few fireworks, we hit the karaoke ad that's how we made noise :)

It has been one of the best Christmas vacation I ever had. I'm am now ready to face the Year of the Snake with high hope and a more optimistic mind >:)

Who want this wrap around snakes accessory? :)

2012: Roller Coaster

The year 2012 wasn't so nice to me in it first half. It has been a helluva roller for me because the turn of things wasn't predictable. . .isn't so acceptable.

I was so happy to hit the first month for being in a real relationship for the first time. However, it was also my first time to spend the Christmas (and New Year) alone. It was my first time to spend my Christmas vacation in Davao as well.

Our blooming relationship :">
A little ways down the road by March-April of last year; my boyfriend visited me in Manila for summer vacation. It was also my 1st time to celebrate my birthday (19th) with loved ones other than my parents. We (with my family) all hit the road to Ilocos Sur for a delightful summer.

After that, there was a sudden change of treatment towards my boyfriend. Back in Davao, I was kicked out of the house by June, few days before our classes resume. No financial aid came for my studies so I had no other option but to seek for my uncle's help. He paid for everything that I needed and he may not know how grateful I am.

If you're wondering why I'm kicked out of the house, I really can't tell. I, myself, am confused as well. I don't know what I did to deserve such.

For the first time, I was troubled financially. I have to skip classes at times to give way to modelling rakets. There was a lot of expenses as I am a graduating student and I don't want to ask everything from my uncle.

I was at my lowest point for several months. thanks to Chino for not leaving me. . . I needed him more than I want him at that time. Thanks so much babs! :)

The latter part of the year was fun-filled though. Parties! There were a lot of parties (last school parties, blogger event parties and there's just too many to mention. Let le photos speak for themselves:

I got invited to Positive's premiere night at Gaisano Mall.
The 3rd year Mass Communication's tribute party for us, seniors :)
MC 3rd year party's theme: SEXY! :)
It was the most memorable slumber party ever. MC juniors and seniors + our awesome teacher = a great party :)

Awesome teacher = Sir Rikki and this bonggang intermission number :))

MC Senior's Christmas party :)
It was our first time to have a block Christmas party. . . and our last kasi graduating na. Ang corny noh. Sayang sana naman kumpleto man lang kami. Anw, we had fun (for those who were present)
And so, for the major turnover of that year, I went back to our province for Christmas break and the rest was history. My mother started to converse with me again. It's as if nothing happened. As much as I want to question her, I'd rather enjoy the reconciliation. for Christmas' sake! :)

A Year at Prestige

Wanting to consume my spare time on something productive, I attended a screening for a
modelling agency on one fine day of my semestral break. I have this classmate
(under the same agency I am referring to) who earns extra income by modelling.
Never have I imagined the impact it would inflict on me.

Models can be classified: Ramp, Print and Push.
Prestige Models and Talents do cater to all of these categories but we cannot deny
the fact that promo models are more in demand because there are a lot of events
(in need of usherettes and push girls) rather than photo shoots or fashion shows.
As a matter of fact, my  first work under Prestige was a push girl for Premier Max condoms.
It wasn't really a good exposure but I really need the work. Moreover, I was never ashamed of it but rather proud for being brave enough to face the men present in the event and distribute condoms...

If it weren't for that event, I would've been single until now. Aw, I'm sorry for this awkward reminiscing. But hey, are you from Davao City? do you aspire to become a model? are you looking for a part-time job? Interested in meeting new people, making memorable experiences and honing your skills in relating with other people? You might want to join me in this agency.

Be fierce and face the camera. I think being affiliated with Prestige made me more confident and boosted my self-esteem.

Look how awkward (and fat) I look when I started a year ago.
I am never this shy now. Moreover, I also became more
conscious of how I appeared in public (if I'm not lazy)
and try to be presentable, most of the time :)

Suzuki Apparels Fashion Show at Marco Polo

Aside from the income and the exposure, what did I get from this decision? I gained friends, established relationships and got a sense of independence. I learned how to manage my schedule and balance my time allotments for work and for school.

In short, responsable ako (I'm responsible) and I know that I am solely accountable for my decisions and actions.

Next, I learned how to stand up. Literally. In this fashion show, I fell on my knees because I stepped on the very looooooooong trail of this gown. I did not lose composure and in a split second I stood up. I didn't know how I did that but I didn't care. The audience applauded and it made me more at ease.

In some work experiences, I also learned to compose and humble myself. There are times where people look down on you (for being an usherette) but there are also times where they look up on you, wants to have a picture with you and treats you extra special.

I had annoying and maddening situations that I had to handle with a smile on my face and my kind approach to these kind of people has been practiced and perfected for more
than a year now.

Oh, I'm just so glad to be where I am right now. We had this client from Manila who owns an advertising agency and he's inviting me to join their company right after my graduation. Isn't it lovely? All my hard work paid off, I'm glad they noticed my diligence at work.

Ms. Chen How

To our talented make up artist and manager, thank you for the opportunity. Prestige Models and Talents has well served its purpose of being an avenue of developing one's skill and personality.
